Smithfield Foods processes hogs into packaged meats and fresh pork, and also raises the animals it processes. Its Packaged Meats arm turns fresh meat into bacon, sausage, hot dogs, deli meats and ready-to-eat foods sold under several brand names to retail and foodservice customers. Its Fresh Pork arm sells primal cuts such as bellies, hams and loins to retail, foodservice and export buyers including China, Mexico, Japan and South Korea. A Hog Production arm raises livestock on owned and contract farms and sells feed and transport services, while a smaller unit extracts heparin, a blood-thinning ingredient, from hog by-products and makes pork in Mexico. It is based in Smithfield, Virginia, and is a subsidiary of a UK holding company.
